Director Q&A
What conversation do you hope this film starts between strangers?
I hope that it encourages people to not only share their feelings with strangers, but also to be curious about what other people might be feeling and to create a safe space for those people to to share their feelings.
What’s one thing you learned while making this film?
If you feel something very deeply, there are probably other people around too that feel the same way.

Has an audience reaction ever changed how you interpret your own films?
An audience has sometimes changed my perception of a character, because when I’m writing I try to just follow the character and try to listen to what they want to do, instead of forcing them to do something they don’t want to do. And sometimes that results in things that I hadn’t even noticed about the character, because the character didn’t notice that about themselves yet. And an audience is more able to point out those things.
Was there a moment when you thought the film might fall apart — and how did you pull through?
I truly felt this enormous desire to get this story out into the world, that I always had this blinding faith that it would get made somehow! I just didn’t expect to be able to do it so soon or with such a great team.
If you could spotlight one unsung hero from your team, who would it be and why?
To make this film we had to crowdfund some part of the budget, and that whole campaign was two years ago. And because of the time between that campaign and the film being shown, it can often seem as if the film just appeared out of nowhere. But the film wouldn’t have existed without those people that believed in the film from the very start.
